THE vital role of the media in holding the government accountable was underlined by Jefferson Hallu, the Clerk to the Parliament of the Solomon Islands, during a media communication and relations training at the Heritage Park Hotel yesterday.
The event, supported by BBC Action and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, focused on strengthening the synergy between Parliament officials and the media to ensure accurate and timely information.
Mr. Hallu stressed that the media is essential in scrutinizing government decisions and actions, helping to maintain transparency and accountability.
He said training aimed to equip Parliament staff with strategies for effective communication with the media, enabling clearer and more accurate reporting on parliamentary activities.
The workshop also focused on building stronger relationships between Parliament staff and local media, facilitating faster and more efficient communication. This collaboration aims to ensure that public access to accurate parliamentary information is enhanced, fostering greater public engagement.
The session also encouraged participants to discuss developing a communication strategy that will streamline the flow of information to the public, ensuring transparency and trust in government actions.
