THE Member of Parliament for West Kwaio Constituency, Hon. Titus Mokofi Fika, has passed away in Honiara.

In confirming the sad news, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare in a special announcement this morning said Member of Parliament (MP)  late Honourable Titus Fika passed away at the National Referral Hospital (NRH), early this morning (Friday) at around 2 am following a prolonged illness

“This morning I stand in front of you with a heavy heart to inform you all that at 2 am this morning, Honourable Titus Fika, the late minister for the Ministry of Environment, climate change, disaster management, and meteorology, was called to rest by our heavenly father at the National referral hospital following a prolonged illness.

“I with my wife and family, or members of the National Cabinet, and the government caucus, convey our most sincere and profound sorrow and condolences to the wife and family and to Honourable Stanley Sofu, family and relatives of the late Honourable Fika for the loss of a great champion for the people, a husband and father, a brother, uncle, and cousin and a role model for all that have been blessed to meet and work with him,” Prime Minister Sogavare said with voice breaking emotionally.

Before becoming a member of the National Parliament, the late Hon. Fika worked in the teaching profession. As a teacher, He rose to the level of the education secretary for Malaita province before being appointed speaker to Malaita Provincial Assembly.

He contested the 2014 National General Election (NGE) and came second to former Honourable late Peter Tom. Later he contested the 2019 NGE under the United Democratic Party banner and won the West Kwaio seat.

Late Hon. Fika will be the second West Kwaio MP to have passed away while in office after former Honourable late Peter Tom who also passed away on November 5th, 2018.

Prime Minister Sogavare this morning said, “I lost a brother, the government has lost a tremendous minister and the country has lost a great leader.

“The Late Hon Fika was characterized by a commitment to serve his people and his country.”
