MAKIRA Ulawa Province is yet to have a quarantine and isolation facility in place for people arriving from Honiara.

This was confirmed by MUP Provincial Disaster Operation Centre (PDOC) Chairman and Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Peter Sitai.

Mr. Sitai said preparation to receive passengers from Honiara is not really up to the expected level however due to the demand and need for people stranded in Honiara to come home, PDOC has come up with plans and strategies in order to receive them.

“Allocating arriving individuals in quarantine facilities is a very tough task as Kirakira at the moment does not have these facilities on the ground.

“The province PDOC has proposed 2 sites to be used as quarantine and another to be used as an isolation site.

“The proposed quarantine site is at Waimapuru National Secondary School (WNSS) however, preparation work on that proposed facility has not yet begun due to financial constraints – same with the other site identified for isolation.

Superintendent Sitai confirmed to Sunday Isles that their best option at the moment is to send people back to their respective communities or villages to be quarantined or put in isolation in already established sites.

“We have negotiated with communities and villages to set aside a building or house to be used as quarantine sites where arriving individuals can be kept there after clearance from swabbing and other required protocols,” PPC Sitai said.
