SOLOMON Islands healthcare system has received a major boost with the official handover of the National Referral Hospital’s new Comprehensive Medical Centre in Honiara.
The 4-story medical centre, a result of the growing cooperation between Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China, was officially handed over in a ceremony last week.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele called the facility a “magnificent gift,” underlining the importance of the deepening friendship between the two countries.
“The state-of-the-art facility, built at an estimated cost of SBD 90 million, is expected to significantly improve the quality of healthcare available to the nation’s people.
“It offers advanced medical services, particularly in cardiology, nephrology, and urology. These specialized services will allow many patients to receive treatment locally, without the need to travel abroad for care.
“The new centre is equipped with specialist clinics for heart, kidney, and urinary tract diseases, as well as a pharmacy and traditional Chinese medicine clinic.
“The building includes modern medical infrastructure, such as a laboratory, CT scan, operating theatres, and a two-bed hemodialysis unit. It also features educational spaces like a training room and a conference centre to support the ongoing development of healthcare professionals,” Prime Minister Manele said.
He said that one of the standout features of the centre is its inclusion of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
“This aspect is seen as a valuable addition to the existing healthcare system, offering alternative treatment options that are both effective and culturally relevant.
“The importance of ongoing partnerships, particularly the deployment of Chinese medical teams, who continue to provide expertise and training to local staff. This collaboration is helping to build local capacity and ensure the centre’s sustainable operation,” the Prime Minister added.
