In his address at the opening of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum, in Honiara last night, Waqa acknowledged the traditional leaders of Guadalcanal for honouring leaders with a traditional Chupu ceremony and expressed gratitude to the government and people of Solomon Islands for hosting the meeting.

Waqa highlighted the significance of the Forum as a platform for Pacific nations to come together and make decisions that shape the region’s future.

He emphasized the need for Pacific countries to prioritize their shared interests and solidarity in the face of a rapidly changing world.

The Secretary General called on leaders to act with courage, wisdom, and foresight, recognizing that the choices they make today will have a lasting impact on future generations.

He emphasized that the theme “Iumi Tugeda” – Let’s Act Now – is a call to revitalize Pacific regionalism and make collective action a reality.

The meeting brings together leaders from across the Pacific to discuss key issues, including peace, financing, regional systems, and strategic partnerships.

Waqa expressed confidence that the Forum would deliver meaningful outcomes and strengthen regional cooperation.

Founded in 1971, it comprises 18 members: Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
