The Premier of Guadalcanal Province, Honorable William Atu, has emphasized that the rehabilitation and reopening of the Avuavu Airstrip is a crucial component of the ongoing peace building process in the region.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Communication and Aviation and the Avuavu landowning groups, held at the Guadalcanal Assembly Chamber, Premier Atu highlighted the importance of this project as a foundation for long-term stability and growth.

The Premier noted that the Avuavu Airstrip has historically been a vital access point for remote communities in east Guadalcanal, and its revitalization will significantly improve connectivity between rural areas and urban centers.

This improved access is expected to foster stronger social cohesion by enabling easier movement of people, goods, and services, thereby supporting small scale economy  and community engagements.

“Infrastructure development, particularly in the form of airstrips and quality road networks, is essential for linking our rural populations to opportunities and resources,” said Premier Atu.

“The reopening of Avuavu Airstrip symbolizes more than just transportation; to me it is a part of peace building process in the Weathercoast” he said.

He said that infrastructure is a key pillar for sustainable development, enabling not only economic growth but also enhancing social integration and governance across Guadalcanal Province.

The Premier called on all stakeholders to continue supporting projects that strengthen the province’s socio-economic growth.

Premier Atu also took the opportunity to express his heartfelt gratitude to the landowners of Avuavu for their willingness to collaborate and allow the rehabilitation process to proceed.

“I want to thank the landowners of this generation for their cooperation and vision in allowing this important process to move forward,” he said.

He further acknowledged the collective efforts of government officials, community leaders, and the people of Guadalcanal, saying, “Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your commitment and dedication to making our policy objectives a reality. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a peaceful and prosperous future for Guadalcanal Province.”
