PRIME Minister Jeremiah Manele outlined his government’s commitment to improving public health and tackling tobacco consumption.

At the official handover of the National Referral Hospital Comprehensive Medical Centre last week in Honiara, The Prime Minister outlined the government’s plan to enforce stronger tobacco control under the Solomon Islands Tobacco Control Act of 2010, which will include measures such as restricting smoking in indoor spaces and on public transport.

Manele revealed that new guidelines will be introduced for tobacco advertising, packaging, and promotions. Additionally, his administration will explore revisiting the licences for tobacco manufacturers, distributors, and retail outlets, with the potential for increased fees to reflect the health and societal costs of tobacco use.

“This new comprehensive medical centre marks a significant milestone for the development of our healthcare system.

“We aim for a continually improving hospital with effective clinical services and governance, aligned with international healthcare standards,” Manele said.

Manele stressed the government’s vision for the National Referral Hospital to evolve into a leading tertiary care facility in the country – with the growing focus on preventative health measures, addressing the impact of tobacco consumption as part of a broader effort to improve the country’s overall well-being.
