Schools Set to Reopen, Dates Announced

FOLLOWING approval by the Cabinet, the Ministry of Education tonight announced schools reopening dates and start of classes dates for all schools in the country.

Announcing the dates tonight, Education Ministry Under-secretary secretary, Mr James Bosamata revealed that the Cabinet has approved Monday 23rd of May 2022 as the date for reopening of schools in the country.

Mr Bosamata explained that it must be made clear that dates for reopening of schools and dates for start of classes is different because those are 2 different processes.

“As announced, Cabinet has approved Monday 23rd of May as the date for reopening of schools – Early Childhood Education (ECE) Centres, Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary and Rural Training Centres (RTC).

“However, it is the dates for starting of classes that is different.

“For secondary and RTC’s Education strands, classes will start on Monday 30th of May 2022.

“This means secondary school teachers and RTC’s should travel to their respective schools if they have not yet by Monday 30th of May.”

Mr Bosamata further announced the dates for Pre-primary and primary education strands.

“13th of June 2022 will be the start date of classes for Pre-primary and primary schools. Teachers should travel to their respective schools by 30th of May 2022.

“As for ECE Centres, classes will start on Monday 4th of July 2022,” Mr Bosamata revealed.

He further added that the 2022 school calender will be revised and sent to all education authorities by Wednesday 11th of May 2022.

“The Curriculum content that will be covered during this year 2022 will be announced as well later this week,” Bosamata explained.

It is understood that it is an important requirement that all schools must have a COVID response plan and protocols before reopening.

“Only vaccinated teachers and staff will be on school grounds and again all eligible students and Staff must go get their vaccination jabs before school starts.” The education ministry advices.
