The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has announced the summary dismissal of its Director of Properties, Facilities & Projects following what the university described as “serious breaches” of procurement and financial policies.
The decision follows an internal investigation and disciplinary process, which found the Director guilty of gross misconduct, including unauthorized procurement, bypassing of financial controls, and failure to follow university procedures.
Speaking on the matter, Vice Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau noted that due process was strictly followed throughout.
“Decisions like this are always painful and emotional,” Professor Aqorau said. “Behind every staff member is a family and a future. However, as difficult as this is, we must uphold the values of good governance, accountability, and fairness.”
The Staff Disciplinary Committee conducted a full review, including giving the Director an opportunity to respond to the allegations. The committee ultimately recommended dismissal — a decision accepted by the Vice Chancellor.
“As Vice Chancellor, I carry the responsibility to safeguard our institution,” Aqorau added. “That means ensuring our rules are followed and that public resources entrusted to us are managed with integrity.”
SINU stated that it will now tighten internal procedures, including reinforcing the university’s “No Purchase Order, No Payment” policy and increasing staff training in procurement and financial compliance.
The university reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership, urging all staff to reflect on their role as guardians of public trust.
“This dismissal is not something we celebrate,” said Aqorau. “It is a sombre reminder of the importance of ethical conduct and the duty we all share to do the right thing.”
