A milestone was celebrated yesterday at the National Sports Stadium as the Solomon Islands marked 10,000 workers sent abroad under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.

The celebration took place during the first day of a two-day pre-departure briefing for seasonal workers preparing to leave for jobs in Australia. The celebration ended with cultural performances, words of encouragement, and smiles all around—marking a proud step forward in a growing journey of opportunity for Solomon Islanders abroad.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, spoke at the event and praised the strong partnership between Solomon Islands, Australia, and New Zealand through the Labour Mobility Unit (LMU).

“The LMU partnership between Australia and New Zealand is very important and calls for two things—compassion and respect. Without one or the other, there is no partnership,” Minister Agovaka said.

He reminded the workers that their time overseas is short-term employment, but it carries great impact for their families and communities.

“Be focused and be good ambassadors for your country,” he told the soon-to-depart workers. “This is an opportunity to help your families and bring positive change back home.”

Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton also shared heartfelt remarks at the event, calling the moment a proud one for both nations.
