Solomon Islands Receives Comprehensive Medical Centre from China

THE Solomon Islands Government yesterday officially received the completed National Referral Hospital Comprehensive Medical Centre from the People’s Republic of China, realising a vision for a new state of the Art Health Facility that was initially discussed 4 years ago. The project commenced 13 months ago and was constructed by Jiangsu Jiangdu Construction Group Co Ltd.

The SBD 90 million project is a 4-story building and is an upgrade to existing medical care services in the country, focusing on comprehensive and quality health care services for patients with heart diseases, kidney diseases, prostatic diseases, as well as a highly specialized interventions for non-communicable diseases.

Speaking at the event today, Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Paul Popora Bosawai acknowledged the project that was initially planned 4 years ago by the Permanent Secretary and the Senior Executive Management Team.

“Four years ago, in 2020 under the leadership of my Permanent Secretary and together with her dynamic Senior Executive Management Team, had a vision for a new state of the art Health Facility.”

“A vision to build a facility that would offer highly specialised tertiary clinical care services, that is disability user-friendly and that would have a high level of Infection Control and Prevention adaptability.”

“A vision that would offer such highly specialised clinical services that could be accessed promptly in country without having to travel abroad, thereby saving the Government millions of dollars.”

“A vision that the health facility would be a state-of-the-art facility, that would promote the best, the cleanest and safe workplace for the specialist doctors, specialist nurses, allied health staff and other supporting workers.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the new Comprehensive Medical Centre (CMC) was that vision which has now been all fulfilled today. These three visions are central to the broader National Health Strategy 2022-2031 visionary pathway for all stakeholders and the NRH as a critical service provider and in our efforts towards the achievement universal health coverage for the people of Solomon Islands, ensuring the best quality health services are accessible for our people,” said Minister Bosawai.

Meanwhile in welcoming guests to the event, Permanent Secretary MHMS Mrs Pauline McNeil thanked the People’s Republic of China for the gift and described it as a collective effort in working together to in responding to challenges.

“As we gather today, let us recognise and remind ourselves of the interconnectedness of our all our efforts and the vital role we all play in delivering health services, improving health systems, while at the same time responding to our sectoral challenges.

“Let us further recognise and appreciate that through collaboration and partnership, and shared determination, we can pave the way for a brighter, more resilient and healthy future for all Solomon Islanders as depicted in our National Strategic Health Plan. This event demonstrates the essence of partnership and collaboration, moving forward to make things happen,” said PS McNeil.

Thus, following the handover, the National Referral Hospital will now work towards installing and mobilizing medical equipment and to improve the capacity of medial staff through training and working closely with the Chinese Medical Team over the next over the next 4-6 months before the Centre can open its doors to the public.

The handover event was attended by nearly 300 guests from the National Government, Opposition, Development and Donor Partners, Business Houses, State Owned Enterprises, Non-Government Organisations, Civil Society Organisations and staff of the National Referral Hospital and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
