In a strong gesture of regional solidarity, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Honourable Jeremiah Manele has reaffirmed his country’s full respect for Papua New Guinea’s sovereignty and its internal decision-making processes, especially regarding the political future of Bougainville.

Speaking at a press conference during his official visit to Port Moresby, Prime Minister Manele made it clear that Solomon Islands sees the Bougainville issue as a matter solely for the people and Government of Papua New Guinea to decide.

“Solomon Islands fully respects Papua New Guinea’s sovereignty and constitutional processes. We recognise that the future of Bougainville is an internal matter to be resolved by the Government of Papua New Guinea through established legal and constitutional mechanisms,” said Prime Minister Manele.

His comments came in response to questions from the local media on whether Solomon Islands had a stance on Bougainville’s push for independence following its 2019 referendum.

“We will not interfere in the ongoing political developments related to Bougainville’s status,” he said. “Our position is clear – we believe in peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and regional unity.”

Prime Minister Manele’s words were welcomed by local leaders, who viewed the statement as a respectful acknowledgement of PNG’s right to handle its internal affairs.

“It’s encouraging to hear such strong support from our Pacific neighbours,” said a PNG government official present at the press event. “This kind of mutual respect strengthens the bonds between our countries.”

Prime Minister Manele concluded his official visit on a positive note and is scheduled to return to Honiara on Sunday, 24th August.
