HON. Henry Suia Maenu, the newly elected Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Tandai Ward, has urged the Guadalcanal Provincial Government to prioritize increased budget allocations for youth, sports, and tourism sectors as the province prepares for the 2025/2026 financial year.

In his maiden speech during the Sine Die Motion last week, Hon. Maenu first thanked his constituents for electing him and pledged to advocate for improvements in Tandai Ward.

He also expressed his appreciation for the government’s approval of a budget surplus for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. However, he stressed that the surplus should be strategically used to address areas crucial for the long-term development of Guadalcanal.

“While the surplus budget is commendable, we must also focus on investments that will bring lasting benefits to our people,” said Hon. Maenu. “Youth, sports, and tourism are key sectors that will unlock future opportunities for growth.”

Hon. Maenu highlighted the province’s youthful population and called for increased resources for youth programs. With many young people facing limited educational, training, and employment opportunities, he emphasized that empowering them is essential for building a prosperous future.

He proposed expanding vocational training programs, funding educational initiatives, and creating community-based job opportunities as part of the youth-focused investment.

“Investing in our youth today means investing in the future leadership and workforce of Guadalcanal,” Hon. Maenu added. “By equipping them with the necessary skills and opportunities, we can build a stronger, more resilient community.”

Apart from youth, Hon. Maenu also urged the government to revive and invest in the province’s sports sector. Reflecting on his own youth experiences at Ruavatu Provincial Secondary School, where he participated in provincial sports games, he expressed regret that such events have become infrequent in recent years. He stressed that sports are not only vital for physical health but also for fostering community unity and teamwork.

“Sports events bring people together and teach valuable life skills,” he said. “We must reinvest in sports programs, improve sports infrastructure, and organize regular events that engage communities across Guadalcanal.”

Finally, Hon. Maenu called for greater investment in tourism, a sector he believes has tremendous potential to boost the province’s economy. With its rich natural beauty, World War II historical sites, and vibrant cultural heritage, Guadalcanal is well-positioned to become a leading tourism destination. However, the province has yet to fully capitalize on this potential. Hon. Maenu urged the government to enhance tourism infrastructure, including improving transportation links, accommodations, and providing training for those working in the tourism industry.

“Tourism can be a significant driver of economic growth, creating jobs and generating revenue,” he said. “With the right investments, Guadalcanal can see substantial growth in tourism, which will benefit local communities and contribute to the provincial economy.”
