ULAWA Island’s second medical store in the Makira Ulawa Province is now in operation and servicing the four clinics on Ulawa island.
Speaking during a brief meeting at Taheramo clinic with committee members, Mr. Richard Taro, Makira Ulawa Province Senior pharmacist officer said that already the second medical store had received its second batch of medical drugs and other clinical accessories from the National Medical store in Honiara.
“So far the Taheramo second Medical store has received two of its orders from the National Medical store shipped from Honiara for the four clinics on Ulawa”, Mr Richard Taro said.
He added that with the Ulawa second medical store now operating, it will be much more efficient for clinics there to receive their medicines in time and also will cut costs to transport drugs as experienced.
“This is indeed a great achievement for us especially the pharmacy division as the establishment of this medical store will lighten the workload for our officers in Kirakira and at the same time solve the usual drug shortage problem and delay of receiving drugs on time”, Mr Taro further said.
He added that his office is still awaiting approval from responsible authorities for a newly funded second medical store and a staff house for Ulawa Island.
“A submission for a staff house and a medical store infrastructure to the Ministry of Health is pending approval. Once approved, Ulawa Island will have a properly designed medical store building and its staff house built at Taheramo”, Mr Taro added.
A permanent staff is soon to be sent over to manage the medical store in the coming months as soon as they identify a suitable person for the post.
In the meantime, they are using a room in the newly built Taheramo Maternity building to accommodate the second medical store.
