Recent national workshop, held in Honiara from January 27-29, 2026, focused on building a better future for transport systems. Organized by the ministry in collaboration with the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the workshop aimed to enhance port operations, reduce shipping emissions, improve urban transport, and increase accessibility.

The workshop brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss key strategies, particularly using the innovative SUTI+ framework. The goal was to validate draft road maps for national transport strategies.

Deputy Secretary Corporate Andrew Houlia highlighted the critical need to address gaps in inter-island shipping, which limit connectivity and economic participation for remote communities. He also emphasized the growing urban congestion in Honiara, calling for improved mobility planning and sustainable transport options. Furthermore, constraints in institutional capacity, financing, and land access hinder infrastructure development and investment.

The government is committed to collaborating with ESCAP and other partners to overcome technical challenges. The aim is to ensure that transport improvements benefit all communities, especially those in remote and vulnerable areas, paving the way for a more connected, sustainable, and inclusive future.
