Pathfinder mentor Tommy Diau, from Malaita Province, was among eight distinguished recipients recognized at the 48th Independence Day ceremony held at the National Stadium.
Mr Diau, a long serving leader of the Kukum Adventist Church (SDA), has dedicated nearly five decades to the Pathfinder Ministry. He coordinated the Kukum Pathfinder Ministry for 32 years before transitioning into his current role as Pathfinder Mentor. Throughout his service, Mr Diau has championed youth development, Christian leadership, and community service. His guidance has helped countless young people grow spiritually, strengthen their character, and gain practical life skills.

“Today’s award means a lot to me and to the community I serve,” Mr Diau told Isles Media after the presentation. “I was very happy for what I receive today from this award. It took me a long time to look after the community, especially young people like Pathfinders, where I helped them.” He said many young people continue to return and express gratitude for the role he played in their lives. “Young people always come back to me and testify my leadership role to them, and they really appreciate my leadership,” he shared.

When asked what kept him committed for so many years, Mr Diau said his passion for young people has always been his driving force. “My interest is in young people; that’s why it takes years and I’m still holding on to this work,” he said. He acknowledged facing challenges over the years but credited his faith for sustaining him. “There are many challenges I face in life but I stand strong because of God who leads me,” he said.

Mr Diau also shared a message to young Solomon Islanders: “Always be faithful in whatever place you are; be faithful in everything.” Looking ahead, he said strengthening the spiritual life of Christians in the Solomon Islands remains central to his mission. “Looking back at the spiritual side, it is very important to help Christians here in the Solomon Islands,” he said.

Mr Diau’s recognition at the Independence Day celebration highlights a lifetime of volunteer service, mentorship, and firm commitment that organisers say has left a lasting influence on youth and the wider community.
