National Stadium Comes Alive for 48th Independence Anniversary and thousands of people gathered at the National Stadium on July 7 to commemorate the Solomon Islands’ 48th Independence Anniversary, joining a colourful national program featuring float parades, official speeches, and cultural showcases.

The celebration opened with a colourful float parade involving 24 government ministries, community organisations, and local groups. Spectators filled the stands as each contingent displayed its identity and contribution to national development.
Honiara City Lord Mayor Councillor Eddie Siapu and the Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police formally welcomed invited guests and dignitaries on arrival. Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale and Madam Wale attended the ceremony alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, marking a significant moment of bilateral friendship.

Prime Minister Wale took part in the General Salute ceremony, signalling the official start of the national program. Rev. Bishop Eric Maefonia, representing the Solomon Islands Christian Association, led a minute of silence for those who have passed on and offered prayers before blessing the national flag.
In his national address, Prime Minister Wale reflected on the country’s journey since independence, urging citizens to uphold unity, responsibility, and collective effort to drive national development and prosperity.

The 2026 Independence Honours and Awards were announced, recognising outstanding Solomon Islanders for their service to the nation and their communities. Australian Prime Minister Albanese also addressed the crowd, congratulating Solomon Islands and reaffirming Australia’s commitment to the enduring partnership between the two countries.

Governor-General Sir David Tiva Kapu was invited to the podium for the presentation of the 2025 Independence Honours and Awards, where eight recipients were formally recognised.
The official program concluded with energetic cultural performances by youth groups, showcasing traditional dances and music that celebrated the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
The event brought together leaders, churches, community groups, and citizens in a shared moment of national pride and reflection.
