THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs & External Trade (MFAET) has announced the formal appointment of Mrs Jane Mugafalu Kabui Waetara as the next Solomon Islands Permanent Representative to the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador Extra-Ordinary and Plenipotentiary, Ambassador-designate to the United States of America and High Commissioner-designate to Canada. Her Excellency, Mrs Waetara was commissioned at the Government House this morning by the Governor-General, His Excellency, Sir David Vunagi.

As the country’s representative to the United Nations, United States and Canada, she is expected to represent and promote Solomon Islands interests in these respective roles. The Permanent Mission in New York facilitates Solomon Islands engagement with the United Nations. As Permanent Representative she will have an active role in maintaining the enduring partnership with United Nations and advocate Solomon Islands interests on global issues. Furthermore, Her Excellency, Mrs Waetara will serve to further Solomon Islands diplomatic interests with United States and Canada. Both US and Canada are long-standing and important bilateral partners of Solomon Islands; the Ambassador-designate is committed to elevate these diplomatic relations during her tenure in office.

Mrs Waetara is a long-time public servant, having served in various roles in the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination (MNPDC) and most recently as Chief Electoral Officer, at the Electoral Commission.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics and Management) from USP, and a Master’s in Business Studies from Massey University.

Ambassador-designate, Her Excellency Mrs Waetara is expected to depart to take up posting in New York in later May 2022.
