AUSTRALIAN High Commissioner His Excellency Rod Hilton was warmly welcomed back to Malaita today by Premier Elijah Asilaua and Members of the Malaitan Provincial Government Executive at the start of his two-day visit.

High Commissioner Hilton and Premier Asilaua discussed the longstanding relationship between Australia and Malaita Province and committed to continue to work together on shared priorities, including improving jobs, economic growth and infrastructure for Solomon Islands most populous province.

High Commissioner Hilton said he was honoured to be attending celebrations for the Malaita Second Appointed Day and looked forward to celebrating the province’s achievements.

“Australia has been working with the Solomon Islands Government and the Malaitan Provincial Government to identify opportunities that will ensure we can build a bright future for Malaita,” High Commissioner Hilton said.

“Under the Solomon Islands – Australia Partnership, we are building quality, sustainable infrastructure that brings job opportunities, and supporting economic growth for the community. “

“We thank you for your ongoing partnership with Australia.”

Premier Asilaua said actions spoke louder than words.

“The fact that you have travelled here means you value Malaita,” Premier Asilaua said.

While in Malaita, High Commissioner Hilton will inspect emergency repair work on the Malaita South Road, representing SBD11 million in funding from Australia, handover a multipurpose community hall in Ambu, launch a new multi-year investment with Baru Conservation Alliance, and sign a Partnership Agreement with three local tourism operators.
