JOHN Nono, an independent candidate for the Honiara City Council (HCC) Mbumburu Ward 3 seat, says he is focusing on important concerns like youth unemployment and women’s empowerment in the lead-up to the 2024 joint elections.

In an interview with SUNDAY ISLES, Nono emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures and policies to tackle unemployment among the youth population in Mbumburu Ward of West Honiara Constituency.

“Leaders should ensure that young people, from ages 15 up to maturity, are not left idle,” he stressed. “We must provide them with opportunities to secure their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to society.”

Nono is running for the HCC seat because he wants to bring about constructive change, especially in terms of making sure that all young people, regardless of background, have access to jobs. He emphasized the role that projects like the CAUSE Project have in advancing development.

“Last year I engaged about 500 youths under the CAUSE Project sponsored by the World Bank; the young generation should be one of the prime focus for today’s development,” Nomo said. “I have worked in close partnership with the Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs (MWYCA) to develop pathways for youth development and guide young leaders in addressing the complex socio-economic challenges facing youths today.

Apart from combating youth unemployment, Nono also aims to support women’s empowerment initiatives in education and other basic essential needs. He underlined how important it is for men to create an atmosphere that supports women’s growth in our society.

Nono also emphasized the importance of merit over familial or tribal affiliations as the country prepares for the 2024 joint election on April 17.

“Do not vote for blood relatives to represent your tribe or family,” he said. Instead, pick a person who can see and handle societal issues and is open-minded. We can pave the way for a better future by working together.”

Nono said that with his all-encompassing vision and commitment to diversity, he is prepared to bring about major change in HCC Mbumburu Ward 3.

“I wish to implement my big plan for the betterment of my community.”
