Principals are more than just managers—they are the heart of their schools, shaping the future of education in the Solomon Islands.
That was the key message from the Minister for Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), Hon. Tozen Leokana, during his opening remarks at the 2025 School Principals’ Conference held at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Panatina Campus.
Addressing school leaders from across the country, Hon. Leokana acknowledged the critical role principals play in every aspect of education, from classroom learning to community partnerships and school management.
“As school leaders, you set the very tone for your school’s culture,” said Hon. Leokana. “You foster positive, inclusive, and nurturing environments where every student feels valued and empowered to thrive. Your vision guides the journey of learning within your institutions.”

He praised principals for their work as instructional leaders, supporting teachers and improving the quality of classroom teaching.
“You champion effective teaching strategies, cultivate a culture of continuous professional development, and ultimately ensure that every student receives the highest quality of instruction,” he said.
Minister Leokana underlined the importance of building strong ties with parents and local communities.
“Your role in community engagement is equally critical,” he said. “By building strong, collaborative relationships with parents, families, and the wider community, you create a powerful network of support that extends beyond the classroom walls.”
He said these connections help enrich students’ learning experiences and create more supportive school environments.
Principals, Hon. Leokana noted, also play a major part in keeping schools running smoothly and efficiently.
“Your skill in managing school budgets, facilities, and resources ensures that your schools operate well and provide the best possible learning environment for students,” he said.
The Minister stressed that strong principal leadership has a powerful and direct impact on student learning and well-being.
“Your guidance, vision, and unwavering commitment directly translate into improved academic outcomes, enhanced social-emotional development, and a brighter future for every child under your care,” Hon. Leokana said.
He thanked principals on behalf of the government and families across the country, acknowledging their leadership in maintaining order, discipline, and purpose in schools.
“I know you are entrusted with creating a culture of learning, respect, and discipline. For that, I offer my deepest gratitude on behalf of the Government of National Unity and Transformation and the many parents whose children are attending ECE centres and schools in this country.”
Minister Leokana later reminded school leaders of the government’s ultimate goal—to provide quality education for every child.
“At the heart of everything you do as school leaders, and everything that MEHRD and Education Providers do, is this Government’s determination that every single child in the Solomon Islands should have the best possible education, and that every child should be given the opportunity to reach their potential.”
The 2025 School Principals’ Conference ends today, offering principals the chance to reflect, connect, and renew their commitment to leading schools and supporting students across the Solomon Islands.
