AS we approach the Second Appointed Day of Malaita Province, Professor Transform Aqorau, Vice Chancellor of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), highlights the virtues of development in Malaita.

He underscores that the province’s growth and progress are essential for the prosperity of our nation. With this in mind, he earnestly appeals to the people of Malaita, its National Leaders, and the Provincial Government to lease the land at Aligegeo for the establishment of SINU’s 4th Campus.

This initiative aligns with SINU’s mission to expand educational opportunities and promote regional development, ensuring a brighter future for all.

Professor Transform Aqorau stated, “Since the enactment of the SINU Act of 2012, our mandate has been to educate and develop human resources nationally. Establishing a campus in Malaita is not only justified by the high population and increasing demand for tertiary education but also essential for addressing the educational needs of our largest province. The proposed campus will significantly reduce costs for students who otherwise have to travel to Honiara, thus making higher education more accessible.”

He further emphasised, “The establishment of this 4th Campus is a pivotal step towards integrating various educational and training programmes to support Malaita’s development. With campuses already established at Panatina, Kukum, and Ranadi, the addition of a campus in Malaita will enable SINU to broaden its reach and impact, fostering a more inclusive educational environment. The focus of the Malaita Campus could be on agriculture, aligning with the region’s strengths and needs, and providing vital training and research opportunities to boost local development.

The Malaita Campus will offer University Preparatory Courses, TVET programmes, and short courses for public and private sector employees, significantly boosting the productivity and skill levels within Malaita. Moreover, this campus will facilitate the training of untrained teachers in the region, contributing to the overall improvement of educational standards.”

Professor Aqorau highlighted, “The Aligegeo site, centrally located and free from land disputes, presents an ideal opportunity for this expansion. By dedicating this land to SINU, the Malaita Provincial Government will enable a smooth transition, allowing us to optimally utilize the existing facilities and generate significant interest in education and training on the island. The economic benefits of this initiative are substantial. The establishment of the campus will address workforce development needs, promote innovative research and training opportunities, and provide a coordinated effort to enhance the region’s economic growth. This vision is a shared dream and aspiration that I believe we can achieve if the Malaita Provincial Government agrees to the site at Aligegeo.”

Professor Aqorau appeals to the government and people of Malaita to allow for the land at Aligegeo to be leased to the University. He stated, “The proposed partnership between SINU and the Province of Malaita should involve the Province dedicating the Aligegeo PSS Campus to SINU, with SINU responsible for subsequent capital developments and operational costs. This collaboration should demonstrate a firm commitment to ensuring quality post-secondary infrastructure and development. Signing an agreement to lease Aligegeo at the forthcoming Malaita Day celebrations will reflect the seriousness and commitment of the people to develop Malaita. The economic benefits of establishing a university campus are substantial. The campus will address workforce development needs by providing essential training and education tailored to the local economy. It will promote innovative research and create opportunities for consultancy services that can drive regional economic growth. Moreover, the campus will reduce the financial burden on students who currently have to travel to Honiara for higher education, making education more accessible and affordable. The presence of the campus will stimulate the local economy through increased demand for goods and services, creating a multiplier effect that benefits businesses and communities alike. Additionally, the focus on agriculture and other relevant programmes will support local industries and enhance productivity.”

Professor Aqorau extended his heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of Malaita for their consideration and support. He emphasised, “Together, we can transform this vision into reality, fostering growth and prosperity for the region. Let us seize this opportunity to make a lasting impact on the future of Malaita and its people. I look forward to working collaboratively to achieve this noble goal and am optimistic about the promising future that lies ahead.”
