Doctors from CMT and local medical team performing procedure.

Recently, a landmark advancement in urological surgery has been achieved at the National Referral Hospital(NRH), where a complex laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for Kidney Cancer was successfully performed through close collaboration between local surgeons and the 5th China Medical Team(CMT) in Solomon Islands.

The patient had experienced intermittent left flank discomfort for several years, which progressed to recurrent pain over the past three years.

Over the past month, the patient’s symptoms worsened significantly, prompting the patient’s to seek further medical care. A CT scan revealed a large exophytic tumor in the lower pole of the left kidney.

The operation was successfully completed after approximately seven hours, without major complications. The procedure was led by Chinese doctor Dr.Zhang Faming and local doctor Dr. Melly, with strong support from CMT Nurse Xie Guofeng, and medical interpreter Mr.Wang Zhangrong and local medical team. Their close cooperation and teamwork were key to the success of the operation.

After the operation, the patient returned safe and sound to the ward. On the first postoperative day, the patient recovered with normal vital signs, no fever, minimal pain, and satisfactory urine output. Drainage was within expected limits, and the surgical wound remained clean and dry. On the day of discharge, the patient was walking along the corridor with great joy.

Dr. Melly noted that in Solomon Islands, kidney tumor surgeries have traditionally been performed through open radical nephrectomy, which is associated with greater surgical trauma, more blood loss, slower recovery and longer hospital stays.“The successful completion of this laparoscopic radical nephrectomy with the help of Chinese surgeon represents a major milestone for urological surgery in Solomon Islands,” Dr. Melly said. “It demonstrates the growing capacity of our surgical teams and brings new hope for patients requiring advanced care.”

Dr.Zhang Faming pointed that this successful surgery marks a key expansion of laparoscopic minimally invasive therapy. Once limited to treating urinary stones, this technique has now been extended to more complex oncological procedures. With the support of the China-Solomon Islands Urological Minimally Invasive Center and close cooperation of medical teams from both sides, the minimally invasive urological practice in Solomon Islands is steadily maturing.

Dr.Chu Liangzhao, the team leader of CMT, stated that the successful operation not only marks significant progress in minimally invasive surgery in Solomon Islands, but also highlights the importance of international medical cooperation. It will promote the development of modern surgical techniques in Solomon Islands and boost the long-term development of local healthcare services.
