HONIARA, Solomon Islands – 05 June 2026: Local investigative journalist Ronald Flier Toito’ona has been appointed Assistant Press Secretary to Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Wale under the Government for Reform, Empowerment, Accountability and Transformation (GREAT) Coalition.
Toito’ona, 36, is of Malaita and Makira-Ulawa provincial heritage. He is a respected figure in Solomon Islands’ media with a strong track record in public affairs and investigative journalism.
At the time of his appointment, he was a key reporter with In-depth Solomons, a Honiara-based investigative newsroom focused on transparency, accountability and public interest reporting.
With more than 11 years’ experience in media and communications, Toito’ona has covered major political developments, governance issues and national events across the country.
His appointment is expected to strengthen communication between the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC) and the public as the government continues its term.
Speaking after his appointment, Toito’ona said he was honoured to join OPMC.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured by the confidence placed in me to serve our country in this capacity. Communication is an important bridge between government and the people, and I look forward to working with the PM’s Press Secretariat to ensure accurate, timely and accessible information reaches all Solomon Islanders, at home and overseas,” he said.
He added that his journalism background would support transparency and accountability.
“Coming from a journalism background, I understand the value of openness and the public’s right to information. I hope to contribute positively to strengthening the relationship between government, the media and our people,” he said.
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Douglas Marau welcomed Toito’ona to the team.
“I would like to personally thank Mr Toito’ona for accepting the offer and for his willingness to work alongside our team,” Marau said.
The appointment comes as the Wale-led government emphasises openness, accountability and reform across key sectors. Toito’ona’s background in strategic communications is seen as an asset to support government media engagement and public information efforts.
Toito’ona began his journalism career with the Solomon Star in 2015 as a junior reporter, later rising to senior sub-editor and acting Editor. In 2020, he moved into public relations, serving part-time as Communications Officer for the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and the Tina River Hydropower Development Project. He returned to mainstream media as a multimedia journalist with SIBC, covering the Pacific Games 2023, before joining In-depth Solomons in early 2024. Before journalism, Toito’ona studied for a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Journalism at the University of the South Pacific from 2010 to 2014.
