The Premier of Rennell and Bellona Province Hon. Eric Saueha has identified access to education as one of the major challenges currently facing the province.
Speaking during a press conference held alongside the Family Support Centre (FSC) National Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Sensitization Training in Honiara last week, Renbel Premier Hon. Eric Saueha said low school enrolment and poor attendance remain serious concerns.
“Many students attend school on a voluntary basis, choosing to stay at home instead of regularly attending classes,” he said.
He mentioned the problem to several factors, including poor learning environments, deteriorating school infrastructure, and absenteeism among some education providers.
The Premier stressed that improving education access and quality is a priority for the provincial government.
He said that Renbel Province has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) aimed at addressing these challenges and strengthening the education sector.
“We are going to put out our goals to support young women and girls in our province and include priority areas in our action plan. We will also engage groups and stakeholders to encourage participation in addressing this situation,” Hon. Saueha said.
He said the province remains committed to working with government ministries and community partners to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for children and young people across Renbel Province.
He called for stronger support from partners to ensure every child completes quality education in Renbel Province.
