The Solomon Islands community in Melbourne gathered over the weekend to commemorate the nation’s 48th Independence Anniversary, with Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Australia Robert Sisilo joining as guest of honour. The event, hosted by the Solomon Islands Victoria Association, brought together families, workers and community leaders to celebrate unity, culture and national pride.

In his address, Mr. Sisilo reflected on this year’s Independence theme, “Our Nation, Our Responsibility and Accountability – Building a GREAT Solomon Islands,” reminding Solomon Islanders that the future of the country depends on the collective efforts of its people. He urged the community to honour the sacrifices of past generations while working confidently toward a stronger and more united nation.

Mr. Sisilo also highlighted Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale’s first official overseas visit to Australia in June, describing it as a clear demonstration of the close partnership between the two countries. He said the visit reaffirmed shared commitments in economic development, labour mobility, climate action and regional security.

A major focus of his speech was the success of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. He revealed that remittances from Solomon Islands workers in Australia exceeded SI$500 million in 2025, making PALM the country’s third‑largest foreign exchange earner. He praised the approximately 5,000 Solomon Islanders currently working across Australia, calling them “outstanding ambassadors” whose contributions support housing, education and small business growth back home.

Mr. Sisilo expressed gratitude to the Victorian Government, local councils, employers and the Solomon Islands community for their continued support of PALM workers. Now in his seventh year as High Commissioner, he encouraged Solomon Islanders to continue upholding responsibility, accountability and unity as the nation moves forward.

He concluded with a message of hope and determination, saying that together, Solomon Islanders can continue building a stronger and greater nation for current and future generations.
