True change in education begins by recognizing and valuing teachers. That was the strong message shared by the Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, Hon. Tozen Loekana, during the World Teachers’ Day celebration last week in Honiara.
“Teachers are the heart of our education system,” said Hon. Loekana. “True transformation starts with respecting their work and making sure their needs are not forgotten.”
Speaking to a crowd of teachers and education leaders, the Minister said that recognition must be both earned and given.
“Recognition is not simply given, but it is earned through dedication, passion, and professionalism shown every day,” he said. “Teachers shape the future of our children and our nation.”
Hon. Loekana said the Government of National Unity and Transformation, through the Ministry of Education, is working with SINTA and other partners to improve teachers’ working conditions.
“This partnership is helping us find better ways to support teachers, provide more training, and make sure they are ready for the classroom,” he said. “These are not quick fixes, but real steps that take time and teamwork.”
The Minister encouraged teachers not to doubt the impact they have on students’ lives.
“Never underestimate the power of your influence,” he said. “You may not see the results right away, but years later, your students will remember what you taught them.”
He reminded teachers that their true value isn’t measured by money or job titles.
“It is measured by the lives you change in the classroom,” he said. “It is in the success and future of your students.”
Hon. Loekana ended his speech by thanking all teachers for their hard work, commitment, and the sacrifices they make every day.
“Thank you for standing strong and for always putting our children first,” he said. “Your light will continue to shine — even brighter.”
