ON 28 February, Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton, formally opened the new cafeteria at King George VI National Secondary School.

The cafeteria was jointly funded by Australia and the King George VI Alumni Association of 1983-1988, under Australia’s hugely successful Community Partnerships program, and was built using materials from local Solomon Islands businesses.

High Commissioner Hilton said “Australia is excited to continue supporting King George VI School and all the students here, firstly through the renovated dormitories as part of Australia’s support to the 2023 Pacific Games, and now with this cafeteria.”

“We want to make sure that every one of you has the chance to reach your dreams, whether that’s becoming a doctor, a teacher, an artist, a scientist, or anything else you set your mind to.”

The King George VI Cafeteria is one of 100 community projects in Solomon Islands funded by Australia in 2024 by the Community Partnerships program, representing more than SBD 23 million in direct funding to local businesses.

The Australian High Commission is accepting applications for the Solomon Islands – Australia Community Partnerships until 23 March. For more information, please visit: https://solomonislands.embassy.gov.au/honi/communitypartnerships.html
