A major solar power project is currently underway in Buma, West Kwaio, as part of a broader initiative to expand renewable energy access in Malaita Province.

The project represents a significant step toward improving living standards in rural Malaita by providing reliable, clean energy.

The project, which is being implemented by Solomon Power and funded by the World Bank, includes two sites—one in Dala and the other in Buma. With an estimated cost of several million dollars, the project covers machinery, construction, and other essential field work.

Jerome Gugumae, the coordinator for TL Builders and Contractor, is overseeing the work at both sites. TL Builders is subcontracted to handle the civil components of the project.

“Our role includes the construction of housing units, fencing, culverts, and other infrastructure,” Mr. Gugumae explained. “Right now, we are in the backfilling stage. Once that is completed, we will begin building construction.”

Initially scheduled for completion by the end of September, the project timeline has been extended due to a delayed start.

Despite the delay, Mr. Gugumae highlighted the long-term benefits for the local communities. “Once completed, people will have access to electricity during the night. Students can study with proper lighting, and it will be easier to charge devices like mobile phones and laptops,” he said.
