Solomon Water is urging customers in Honiara, Auki, Noro and Tulagi to begin conserving water and using it wisely following the declaration of El Niño by the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service.

El Nino brings prolonged dry weather conditions. This can drastically reduce water availability. Solomon Water is encouraging customers to take early action to reduce water use and help protect water supplies throughout the El Niño period.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ray Anderson stated “We are currently experiencing some water supply disruptions due to factors unrelated to El Niño, however we are closely monitoring water source levels and weather conditions across our service areas.

Should water levels decline, we may need to introduce temporary water rationing measures to manage available supplies responsibly and maintain essential water services for all customers”.

Solomon Water is working closely with the Drought Advisory Group and other government agencies and stakeholders to prepare for the potential impacts of El Niño.

As part of its preparedness efforts, the Solomon Water has increased monitoring of water sources and is carrying out routine inspections and maintenance of critical water supply infrastructure to strengthen system reliability.

Solomon Water is calling on all customers to do their part by adopting water conservation practices now. Conserving water is a shared responsibility, and every household, business and institution can help reduce demand and protect limited water resources during periods of prolonged dry weather.

Solomon Water will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide regular updates on water supply conditions and any temporary water conservation or water rationing measures that may become necessary.
