Malaita Province’s people united at DC Park for 42nd Second Appointed Day, a day of reflection, shared pride, and renewed commitment to peace and development.

The three-day celebration continues until Saturday, August 16, featuring cultural performances, sports, speeches, and community gatherings — a true reflection of Malaita’s spirit.

In his official address, Malaita Premier Hon. Elijah Asilaua reminded all Malaitans that the celebration is more than a commemoration — it is a moment to reflect on the province’s journey and the shared identity of its people.

“This day is not only for leaders in Auki or Honiara,” Premier Asilaua said. “It is for every woman selling at the market, every child in school, every farmer tilling the land, and every church and tribal elder guiding our people.”

The Premier spoke passionately about unity and the role every individual plays in building the Malaita they all envision.

“Let us all take ownership of this celebration, for it is a celebration of who we are — a proud, resilient, and resourceful people,” he said. “Through our shared diversity, we strengthen the bonds that hold us together. Through unity, we open the door to prosperity.”

Premier Asilaua also touched on the importance of learning from history and working closely with the Solomon Islands Government and international friends based on the principle of “friends to all, enemies to none.”

He highlighted that development must begin at home — in villages, families, and communities — and that no one should be left behind.

“Our past must guide us, but it is our shared future that will improve the lives of all,” he said.

This year’s theme focuses on honoring culture, building peace, and transforming Malaita together — values the Premier said must be lived, not just spoken.

“Let us celebrate our different languages, cultures and way of life, not as divisions but as friends,” he said. “Let us unite across our diversity to speak with one voice for peace and progress.”
