Dozens of people living with disabilities in Honiara are now sleeping more safely under Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN), thanks to a partnership between People with Disability Solomon Islands (PWD) and World Vision.

This week, PWD began distributing mosquito nets to vulnerable households across East, Central, and West Honiara — with plans to reach communities just outside the town by week’s end. The distribution will continue throughout the week, reaching more families and spreading both protection and knowledge to those most in need.

Yesterday, the team visited the Burns Creek area in East Honiara — where the response was heartwarming.

“This program started on Monday and will continue for a week,” said Lydia Raymond, PWD’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Officer. “We’re targeting all people with disabilities in Honiara to make sure no one is left behind.”

Raymond explained that the initiative was launched after realizing many people with disabilities were missed during earlier government mosquito net distributions.

“Some of them didn’t receive any nets when the Ministry of Health did their first rollout,” she said. “So we stepped in to fill that gap.”

Alongside handing out the LLINs, the PWD team is also providing health education directly to homes.

“An awareness on the LLIN nets will also be carried out in each home while distributing the nets,” Raymond said. “We explain how they work and why it’s important to use them.”
