TEACHERS throughout the Solomon Islands recently marked World Teachers’ Day on October 5 with the theme 2022 “The transformation of education begins with teachers”.
Across the country, they celebrate the role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.
According to the Principal of St Joseph’s Tenaru (Catholic Secondary School), Abraham Hihiru, most times teachers in the country are often overlooked and least recognized people in our society, and they are always faced with heavy criticism especially when things are not right.
Abraham told SUNDAY ISLES that despite our shortfalls, it is also important for ordinary citizens and leaders in the country to understand that teachers are the main reason why we have doctors, engineers, and every job.
“Teachers are the backbone of any nation, they teach students how to read, write, and other very important subjects. Everyone needs to be more appreciative of them. It’s quite obvious to say that teachers in the country do many things that some people don’t recognize, and it’s sad to say that we don’t get enough recognition as we expected,” he said.
He said that it’s vital for the government to address the plight of teachers and the education system in the country.
“Improving teachers working conditions and welfare, providing access to professional development opportunities, recognizing the professional status of teachers should be the priority of the government towards transforming the education system of the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Abraham thanked the government through its Ministry of Education and Human Resources for recognizing the teachers’ efforts in the education sector of the country.
He also congratulated teachers for playing an important role as primary drivers of students’ education and more importantly for their memorable contribution to the country’s education system.
“I would like also to congratulate all our teachers in the country for their diligent work in educating the future human resources of the country.
“The future of the country depends on your faithful and dedicated work as teachers.
“My appeal to all our teachers is to let us continue to commit ourselves to the work that we are assigned to do so that they can shape the future of our country in the right direction,” he added.
