Governor General His Excellency Sir David Tipa Kapu has sounded the alarm over the growing challenges faced by young people in the Solomon Islands, calling the situation “alarming” and a threat to the nation’s future.
Speaking during the official parade to celebrate King Charles III’s 76th birthday at the Solomon Islands National Stadium in Honiara, Sir David said youth issues must be urgently addressed.
“Youth problems are not hard to see,” he said. “Many of us have family, friends or wantoks who are facing these struggles in our own homes.”
The Governor General defined youth in the Solomon Islands as people aged 15 to 34 years. He pointed out that while the UN defines youth as 15 to 24 years old, the age range can differ across Pacific Island countries. Currently, the Solomon Islands has no law that clearly defines the youth age group, with the closest legal reference being the Juvenile Offenders Act, which only covers those under 18.
Sir David warned that if action isn’t taken soon, these problems could lead to serious consequences.
“If we don’t deal with the problems our youths face, it will become a time bomb that may explode in the near future,” he said, referring to recent violence, drug use, and killings involving young people.
He stressed that young people are the future of the nation and urged leaders and communities to act now.
“We must take responsibility to develop and empower them so their dreams can come true,” he said. “If we ignore their struggles, we risk peace, unity, and the very future of our country.”
