A group of Solomon Islanders from the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM), currently working in Ayr, Queensland, brought music, and faith to a church mission held on October 5th in Mackay, Australia.

The seasonal choir members, who attend All Saints’ Anglican Church in Ayr, took part in the mission to share their Christian beliefs and showcase their cultural traditions.

The seasoal ACOM group captured a group photo during their historical site visits.

Speaking to SUNDAY ISLES online, choir chairman Timothy Magusi said the event was a meaningful one that showed how deeply rooted Christianity is in the Solomon Islands.

“This event was a great one, which showed how Solomon Islands is a Christian country,” Mr. Magusi said. “We believe we are setting good examples for other seasonal brothers and sisters. The main idea is to not forget our Christian beliefs and culture, with love and respect, even in a foreign land.”

Led by Father Jeffrey, a Solomon Island priest living in Queensland, the group of 50 members has been active throughout the year, attending many events that have also been welcomed by local leaders and farmers.

The choir is made up of Solomon Islanders who are currently working on different farms around Ayr and Townsville in North Queensland.

Along with the church mission, the group also joined the Mackay Sugar Festival. There, they performed traditional Solomon Islands dances and joined other local performers, including Australian dancers.

“The Sugar Festival brought people together to share stories, music, and dance. It created a sense of unity and connection within the community,” Mr. Magusi said.

The festival also celebrated the culture and history of the Australian South Sea Islander community, who have played a key role in the sugar industry of Mackay and Queensland.

Mr. Magusi said the group felt blessed to take part in both events and were especially happy to meet other Solomon Islanders living in Australia.

“It was a joyful and special time for all of us,” he said.
