Solomon Islands has ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict.

In a ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters last week, H.E Mrs. Jane Waetara formally deposited the instrument of ratification on behalf of the Solomon Islands government to mark the ratification on Friday 20 January 2023.

The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict is one of two international agreements anchored on the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) that aims to protect children from recruitment and use in hostilities. Promotion and protection of the rights of children in the country is one of the important policy objectives for the Solomon Islands Government.

The ratification of this Optional Protocol recognizes that important commitment both at the national and international front.

Solomon Islands also ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography last year in August 2022.
