SOLOMON Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Jasper Highwood Anisi has warned that unforeseen events could disrupt Election Day.

The CEO of the Electoral Commission made the statement at the recent SIEC talkback show on radio SIBC, emphasizing the potential to delay Election Day if there is a sudden occurrence of severe weather in the country that could potentially hinder the safety of voters and poll workers.

He said the Electoral Commission is committed to ensuring that every voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot in a safe and secure manner.

“The Electoral Commission has the power to differ or delay the polling date in the country,” Anisi said. “In terms of the powers of the electoral commission under Section 61 of the Electoral Act, it gives power to the Commission to either suspend the election or extend the election for a particular constituency or province experiencing a disaster or affected by a disaster.”

The 2024 joint election has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 17.
